Cedar Rapids Harmony School of Music receives grant from Los Angeles Philharmonic

CEDAR RAPIDS – The Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil) awarded the Harmony School of Music $ 25,000 as part of Partners in Music Learning, a grant initiative of LA Phil’s national YOLA program, supporting the creative development of young people and music programs across the US Backed by an anonymous donor, this is the first refinancing opportunity offered by the LA Phil.

Harmony School of Music is one of 18 organizations to receive Partners in Music Learning funding. The funds will support capacity building, programming and increased access of young people to music learning opportunities. This initiative will also create a national cohort of music educators, providing grantees a platform for shared learning and support while deepening their impact beyond the grant period.

“We are thrilled to receive this award and to be part of a national group of programs developing best practices for the creative empowerment of young people,” said Jessica Altfillisch, Founder and Executive Director of Harmony School. “This funding and the opportunity to learn with and other programs will help Harmony School develop free programs here at home while increasing opportunities for our students and teachers around the world.”

The reallocation program was developed in consultation with leaders and stakeholders in the fields of youth development and music education and includes young people. Elsje Kibler-Vermaas, vice president of learning at LA Phil, said: “It was important for us to design a democratic grant making process. We have worked to examine the perspectives of those the program aims to serve and will provide a platform where all participants learn from each other and from each other. “
