Celebrate World Music Day | Cyprus Mail

June 21 is a special day for many reasons. It is the international day of yoga and the summer solstice but also the world day of music. With three different reasons to celebrate, there are bound to be a variety of events around the island and a somewhat unique performance to rejoice in all that is musical and more at the Rialto Theater in Limassol.

World Music Day was established in 1982 and is celebrated across Europe.

Starring world-renowned singer Vakia Stavrou in a multicultural repertoire from around the world, a special performance will take place at Rialto on June 21 accompanied by famous pianist Manolis Neofytou.

Stavrou, originally from Cyprus, is an internationally renowned singer and songwriter, based in Paris, France. After completing her musical studies at the Prague Conservatory, she pursued a career in the music industry and made an important debut after being signed by SONY Music in Athens, Greece. Her own composition Sozinha, which she recorded in Portuguese, quickly became a big hit in Greece soon after the release of her debut album and soon after, in many countries in Europe and Latin America.

She has been described as “a breathtaking voice that moves the audience at the same time” or even “a highly sophisticated and enchanting artist, who brings out the great beauty of her voice”. His current projects include an upcoming recording of his new album in Paris and concerts across Europe.

Accompanying him on stage in the evening, Neophytou does not let himself be left behind. He gave his first solo recital at the age of 11, just before entering the Moscow State Central Special Music School. He represented Cyprus at the Eurovision Classical Competitions in Brussels (1992), Warsaw (1994) and Lisbon (1996), after winning the Cyprus National Competitions.

Homage to Greek Music is the title of his first CD, which received a very good review from Mikis Theodorakis. He also wrote the score for the documentary film Alessia de Ninno, which won an award at the National Film Theater in London. He teaches piano at the Arte Academy of Music, the European University of Cyprus and the Limassol National Music School. On June 21, the two acclaimed Cypriot musicians join forces to entertain Limassol audiences and celebrate music.
