The Guildhall School of Music has announced its Fall 2022 lineup, during which the school will present music and drama from September until December 2022. For this article only classical vocal/operatic performances are listed.
Royal Opera House and Guildhall School composer-in-residence Oliver Leith and librettist Matt Copson adapted Gus Van Sant’s 2005 film about the final days of iconic Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain to create “Last days.” The opera tells the story of Blake, a musician who fled rehab to return home. Yet objects, visitors and memories haunt him, distracting him from his real goal: self-destruction. Copson co-directed the work with Anna Morrissey.

“Looking West, Vaughn Williams’ 150th Birthdayis a concert-theatre work created by Guildhall School composition director Julian Philips and librettist Rebecca Hurst. Nova Music Trust commissioned the work, in collaboration with Presteigne Festival, to celebrate the composer’s 150th birthday. Joining the Guildhall musicians on stage will be soprano Rebecca Bottone and mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones. The play will have its London premiere on Williams’ birthday.

In November, the Guildhall School will present a triple opera project including Massenet’s one-act suite to ‘Manon’, “The Portrait of Manon; “Lady Ethel Smyth”Gallant party», based on themes of mistaken identity and disguise; and Nino Rota’s one-act”I am shy», a comic work described as a romance gone wrong.

The vocal performances conclude in December with “Autumn Opera Scenesfeaturing singers and coaches from the first year of the Guildhall School Opera course. The concert will include excerpts from classical and contemporary operas.
