On May 16, 1943, the nearly month-long Warsaw Ghetto Uprising ended when German forces crushed Jewish resistance and blew up the Great Synagogue.

Ten years ago: General Ratko Mladic (RAHT’-koh MLAH’-dich) was tried by the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal in the Netherlands, charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and crimes of war. (Mladic would be found guilty of 10 counts and sentenced to life in prison.)

Five years ago: The White House issued a furious denial after a report that President Donald Trump personally asked FBI Director James Comey to drop the bureau’s investigation into National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

A year ago: Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City leveled three buildings and killed more than 40 people; the attack was the deadliest in the latest round of violence between Israel and Hamas. Hamas fired rockets from civilian areas of Gaza into civilian areas of Israel; one rammed into a synagogue in the southern city of Ashkelon hours before evening services for the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, but no injuries were reported.
