Lehmberg edited the book with fellow music education researcher C. Victor Fung of the University of South Florida; she also contributed one chapter (“Participatory Music Making and Quality of Life of Older Adults”) and co-wrote two additional chapters as well as the introduction and interludes between each of the book’s ten studies. UMass faculty member Stephen Paparo also authored a chapter, which analyzes the significance of participating in Eric Whitacre’s virtual choirs.

According to the publisher’s description, the book uses “multiple methodologies and perspectives to consider the social, cultural, and psychological meanings of musical participation across the lifespan…contributors combine personal voices and vivid narratives with the scholarship to present many potential meanings of musical participation, and lay out research-based implications for lifelong music education.

The book includes ten original studies of the musical engagement of children and adults of all ages, including native-born citizens and immigrants, in both virtual and in-person settings such as choral ensembles and instrumentals, music lessons and community groups.

According to Lehmberg, “The book is intended for academics and professionals in school and community fields related to music, as well as readers interested in general education, social psychology, lifelong learning, and aging studies. We hope it will be a valuable addition to postgraduate courses in contemporary music education, lifelong learning in music or research methods in music education.

Lehmberg and Fung also co-authored “Music for Life: Music Participation and Quality of Life of Senior Citizens”, which was published in 2016 by Oxford University Press.
