“Being unable to speak your truth” is a “crippling feeling,” says Sophia Bel (aka “Princess of the Dead”), whose new single, “2AM (And I Did It Again)”, looks at the drama of ‘a morning spent writing moving letters with no one at the front desk. “I broke my hand trying to say it with a pen,” she sings over the chorus, capturing the angst of the sad boys of the late 90s and early 2000s who stole our hearts. by pouring their grief on stage in bands such as Fall Out Boy and Green Day. ”

The Montreal musician is preparing to release her first album, Avoiding anxious, due out in the spring of 2022. And Today’s Gout is a taste of his melancholy, self-reflective perspective – one that draws from his childhood and all the different skate-punk acts. and emo-wave that she listened to back then. Naturally, “2AM” sounds nostalgic, but with all the clarity of a today’s narrator in touch with his innermost feelings.

For Bel’s clip, director Léa Taillefer wanted to create something that combines beauty and humor, while making the viewer want to dream and travel. “I was deeply inspired by the 8mm family videos,” she says of the classic processing, and decided that filming in London “would add to Sophia’s universe”. So the two raced wildly across the UK, with Taillefer’s camera in hand, filming Bel as two best friends documenting a whirlwind trip together.

The style reflects Bel’s playful approach to fashion, with tons of outfit changes as deeply personal as the lyrics she sings on “2AM”. One look layers a mint baby doll dress over a striped shirt with a matching knit cardigan; in another, Bel dons a giant furry pink hat and corset with low-rise patchwork jeans. Hair ranges from cyberpunk updos to monstrous spikes, all largely influenced by Japanese street style and designers who are close friends.

This look is my current silhouette obsession. I was very inspired by Japanese street style; my Pinterest boards are filled with photos of Fruits magazine. This winter, I’m thrilled to have fun layering leggings and long, soft textiles that catch the wind so well.
