The West Holmes Local Schools School Board bade farewell to Acting Superintendent John Thomas as he oversaw its final meeting on Monday evening.
“John came to see us during a year of great turmoil and emotions as we mourn the passing of Aaron Kaufman, ”said Chairman of the Board, Andy Jones. “If that hadn’t been enough, we were also in the middle of a pandemic that seemed to change what we had to do every day.
“Fortunately, you came very highly recommended by the people we spoke to, and they were people we trusted,” Jones continued. “They assured us that we wouldn’t go wrong with you, and they were absolutely right. You stepped into this role as if you were a Knight for decades, not just minutes. trust and commitment to our staff and for that we are eternally grateful. “

Thomas, who has led the district for the past year, is replaced by Eric Jurkovic, who has been hired to lead the district.

Thomas said the pandemic is preventing him from doing one thing he’s always done, and that is meeting people.
“Last year I was in Madison before the pandemic hit and interviewed 398 staff; took every bus, got to know the kids and the staff,” Thomas said. . I got to know the community by taking the buses and seeing where everyone lived. It was a normal year, then March came and everything changed.
Thomas said he regrets not getting to know everyone better because of the pandemic.
“Those I met, I was really impressed,” he said. “I am impressed with this community and the way you support the school system. The children are wonderful.
West Holes track and field team honored
Sporting director Adam Braately praised the performance of the spring sports athletes, led by two-time state champion Lane Graham, who won the shot put and discus competition at the recent track and field championships of the OHSAA.
“At the state competition I was very excited to see Lane pitch,” said Braately. “In a lot of his competitions I was pretty busy running, and I can’t do the shot put and the discus very often. He dominated the shot put. All three throws would have won the championship. State, and he gained more than four feet.
“He made the record a bit more dramatic,” AD added. “He was doing really well and was in second place but fell to third place before the last lap. Graham was one of six members of the track team to win All-Ohio honors for placing in the top eight spots in the state.
Brady Taylor won All-Ohio honors for a fourth place finish in the 200-meter race, as well as anchoring two relay teams.
“It wasn’t Brady’s first trip to a state. He actually competed in five different events during the state competition, which you don’t see very often, and he finished All-Ohio in four of those five, ”Braately said. “He’s been a two-time All-Ohio in the 4×200 and was also named the East District Track Athlete of the Year.”
Taylor teamed up with Emmett Myers, Gavin Freeman and Sawyer Pritt in 4×100 (sixth) and with Austin Myers, Emmett Myers and Freeman in 4×200 (fourth). Emmett Myers also placed seventh in the pole vault.

West Holmes Coaching Contracts Approved
In other sports-related actions, the board approved the 2021-2022 football coaching contracts for Zach Gardner and his assistants Ed Honabarger, Zach Golec, Tom Eastep, Matt Torgler, Jaret Aubiehl, Geoff Wagers and volunteer assistant Ron Hay. College football head coach Scott Vaughn and assistant Kelly Camacho have also been approved.
Megan Roberts has been approved as Head Coach of Volleyball with Assistants Krystal Patterson and Cara Park. Samantha Rhonemus has been approved as a college coach.
Kevin Beachy and Michael Ewing have been approved for cross country and Jason Arnold and Schuyler Jones have been approved as head football coaches for boys and girls. Ayla Uhl and Jason Snyder have been approved as assistant coaches.
Mike Molnar has been approved as the head coach of the high school golf team and Keith Troyer has been approved as a middle school golf coach. Jason Otto has been approved as the Head Coach of Women’s Tennis and Evan Aurand, Nate Ewing and Tim Meyer have been approved as Volunteer Assistant Coaches.
Jim Park and Lisa Ogi were approved as high school faculty directors, while Nic Fioritto and Nina Lanning were approved as college faculty directors. Raven Wilcox, Beth Lemon, and Kim Brown have been approved as cheerleader advisors, and Brian Dodd and Mike Pacula have been approved as Group Director and Deputy Group Director. Kristen O’Brien has been approved as High School Music and Choir Director as well as Theater Co-Director with Dodd. Kris Shearer has been approved as a theater director.
The contract between West Holmes and the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office was OK.
In staff shares: Cody Kelly (high school), Dana Downs (middle school), Gannon Petrullo and Myranda Miller (ESSER) have all been hired as intervention specialists.
Andrea Povick was hired as secretary, Tara Schonauer as bus driver and Sherri Barkman as media assistant.
The board also accepted and thanked the Millersburg Mennonite Church for their donation of $ 1,000 to Millersburg Elementary School and $ 1,000 to the Millersburg PTO.
